Venezuela, a South American country struggling both politically and economically for many years, is at the center of an international crisis. On January 3-4, 2026, the situation unfolded into an unprecedented event; the United States military launched an operation in Venezuela and captured the country’s president, Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores. This has been a shock to many around the word as a huge shift in global politics.
U.S. officials say President Donald Trump ordered military operations in Venezuela. Military forces entered areas of Caracas, the capital city, early on January 3rd. Many explosions were reported with sightings of aircraft over the city.
Afterwards, Trump announced the capture of Maduro and his wife as they are brought out of Venezuela to the United States facing criminal charges of drug-trafficking which has been pending since 2020.
Trump has said this was a successful operation and the U.S. will remain in charge of Venezuela until a safe transition can happen. This means the U.S. the government will help to manage the situations arising in Venezuela for the time being.
Many both inside and outside the United States say this operation violates international law as military force was involved without international approval while others are worried over corruption of power in America. Some have even praised Trumps crackdown on narcoterrorism.
Maduro had ruled Venezuela since 2013, leading to a political movement called Chavismo. A socialist and anti-imperialist idea from former president Hugo Chavez. It is unclear if Chavismo will continue without the longtime leader.
After the raid, Vice President Delcy Rodriguez was declared the “acting president” by Venezuelan Supreme Court. As of now, there have been no set plans for a new election while Maduro is abroad.
This has lead Venezuela to a state of political uncertainty as some institutions remain under Maduro’s leaderships. With elections uncertain as of right now, this brings issues for probably political rivals and citizens who will truly govern.
Even before this event occurred, Venezuelans have been struggling with the economic collapse of the region. Many face poverty and limited access to clean food or water. Venezuela is also facing one of the largest humanitarian emergencies in the Western Hemisphere with many fleeing to countries like Colombia and Peru for work, safety and stability. The United Nations and other aid agencies have tried to support people both inside and outside Venezuela but funding and limited access makes this a challenge. Human Right groups within the country have documented abuse citizens faces which have led to being arrested or sent to detention facilities.
The United Stated has since targeted Venezuela’s oil and is even cutting shipments to Latin countries like Cuba who heavily rely on it. Venezuela’s oil is the largest reserved which many question if it will be used to revive oil use and how this will affect international relations.
Right now, Venezuela is at a moment of uncertainty. A historic military operation which led to the capture of a longtime leader. Venezuela remains fragile as its economic and social structure has become affected after years of crisis. These challenges have affected the lives of millions of Venezuelans as international communities watch.
