At 76 Trinity Place, Trinity Youth After school is redefining the importance of giving teens a safe space to grow, create, and connect.
In lower Manhattan, Trinity Youth After school has become a place of empowerment for New York City teens. From sports and art to mentorship. Trinity offers more than just after school programs – it offers a second home for young people who seek guidance, friendship and purpose.
Sam S, a dedicated youth advisor and sports coach, has been a part of this center for four years. She leads basketball in the winter and flag football in the spring, introducing vast opportunities for girls. “Connecting with kids as a youth advisor and being supportive through validating them means a lot – many don’t have that outside of here,” Sam said. She views Trinity as a safe space in a busy city, adding, “Students could be doing so many other things, but instead they’re here learning how to be better people.” Sam hopes to see more male mentors, additional staff and extended hours in the future for Trinity’s growing number of participants.
V Lewis, a senior youth advisor, runs Trinity’s art space, where creativity comes alive through crocheting, clay projects, and open art sessions. “It’s a safe space for kids to be themselves and ask questions as they might not know how to ask anywhere else,” V shared. They also see the potential for career based programs like cosmetology or skill-building workshops to prepare youth for life after high school.
Students at Trinity voiced the same appreciation. Kahlaila Barton, a senior, attends the center three to four times a week, enjoying sports, art and study hall. “It’s nice teens have something to do after school and get help that’s provided here,” she said. Michael Mclean Jr, a senior, visits nearly every day, participating in basketball, chess and youth groups. “It’s cool – many teens don’t have these opportunities. You can benefit from tutoring, jazz band, or dance,” He explained. Others like Tina Aggoun, a sophomore, value Trinity as a place to open people’s minds to new things” and distract them from school life, while Wilbert Hector, a sophomore, praises the exposure to new sports and the chance to meet new people from different schools.
The staff and students agree that Trinity Youth After school is a community. Whether it’s through teamwork, creativity or meaningful conversations, this center continues to shape compassionate young leaders. As Sam expressed, “This place teaches you how to be a better person and know yourself more.” With hopes of expanding programs and space, Trinity remains committed to giving teens the opportunity to thrive, one activity at a time.
